What is Chiropractic

The Science of Chiropractic

You’ve probably heard of chiropractors, and you may even know someone who sees one regularly. But what exactly is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a primary branch of health care that focuses on the function of the body as a whole, with an emphasis on the spine. When the function of the spine is interfered with, it negatively affects your nervous system.

The nervous system is comprised of the brain and spinal cord, which is responsible for every single cell, muscle, organ and feeling in the human body.

So, a chiropractor’s job is to remove any interference and restoring the communication between brain and body, allowing the body to flourish to its true potential. This is done using a variety of techniques with the focus of care being on the use of specific manual adjustments of the spine.

The History of Chiropractic

Chiropractic is not a new practice by any means. In fact, it has its roots in ancient Greece. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, wrote about spinal manipulation in 400 BC. Spinal manipulation was also used in China and other parts of Asia for centuries.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century that chiropractic really began to take shape as a profession. In 1895, Daniel David Palmer, a magnetic healer from Davenport, Iowa, performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a man named Harvey Lillard.

Lillard had been deaf for 17 years after suffering a fall and Palmer claimed that he was able to restore his hearing with a single adjustment.

Palmer went on to open the first school of chiropractic in 1897. From there, the profession grew rapidly. By 1922, there were more than 500 chiropractic schools in operation in the United States. Today, there are more than 100 chiropractic schools worldwide and the profession is regulated in most countries.

How Does Chiropractic Work?

Chiropractors use a variety of techniques to adjust the spine and other joints in the body. The goal of these adjustments is to restore function thus balancing the body and mind allowing healing to take place.

The founder of chiropractic, DD Palmer, taught that altered nerve flow was the root cause of dis-ease and that dysfunctional spinal vertebrae negatively affect nerve flow. It is believed that restoring the proper function would restore health.

Being healthy is the innate state of the body and where it wants to be. When the body is communicating in a balanced state it allows the body to adapt and overcome the stresses in its environment. The stress comes in 3 ways; thoughts(mental), trauma(physical) and toxins(chemical).

One of the most common misconceptions about chiropractic is that it is only effective for back pain. However, chiropractic can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including headaches, neck pain, TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and more.

The overall goal of a chiropractor is to balance the body and allow it to function to its true potential.

Is Chiropractic Safe?

Chiropractic is considered to be one of the safest forms of healthcare available. In fact, it has been shown to be much safer than taking medication or having surgery.

Side effects from chiropractic are rare and are typically minor, such as soreness or stiffness.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

There are many benefits of chiropractic care. This type of care can help to relieve pain, improve range of motion, and reduce inflammation. It can also help to improve nerve function and boost your immune system.
